Background
Born into the Redbelly Hive of the Black Shroud, Nichais acted as one of many healers for the group, until one particular Wood Wailer raid on the Hive (performed in conjunction with adventurers from the Gridanian guild) decimated the settlement to an extent previously unseen.
With the Hive gutted, Nichais blamed his own shortcomings as a healer for the extent of the devastation- leaving the Black Shroud in order to learn the art of alchemy in order to better assist his community.
Arriving in Ul'dah on foot, with precious little funds and nowhere to stay, Nichais petitioned the alchemist guild for patronage. Due to both the guildmaster's disinterest in him as a layman and his preoccupation with a number of other matters, this was a process that lasted a good few months.
In order to survive the interim, Nichais did what he had to. He wound up learning the art of street dancing for coins. Showing no talent, but not lacking in commitment, Nichais was accepted into a small troupe. As his skills grew, he was invited to participate in the after-dark activities of the Ul'dahn elite as one of many other "performers."
Sketchy as this line of work was, it served as a good opportunity to forge some associations with a number of interesting people. From certain members of the Syndicate to business owners, Nichais made a number of connections as both a dancer and as a companion.
Yet he found something he valued more. The company of bards.
Nichais found his talent- song- and spent his spare time learning the basics of a multitude of instruments from the troupe's musicians.
As time went by, the endorsement of a number of powerful members of Ul'dah's elite (clients- paying in kind for services rendered as a performer) forced the Guildmaster of Ul'dah's alchemist guild to relent. He finally posited his acceptance of Nichais into his fold, yet by this point Nichais was no longer interested in alchemy. Furthermore, he wished to be far away from the whims of the Ul'dahn elite.
Nowadays,Nichais travels from town to town, eking out a living via his talent- song- and staying one step ahead of the guilt of abandoning his home.

A whimsical and elusive duskwight elezen with a talent in song and telling tales... and a hidden talent for Amdapori white magic.
Non-judgemental and easygoing, Nichais is best described as sweet-natured and possessive of an effortlessly gentle demeanor, but he has his hangups.
Although his time in Ul'dah has removed the coarseness from his speech and demeanor, he retains a number of problematic traits which indicate that one can certainly take the Redbelly from the Hive, but cannot take the Hive from the Redbelly.
The first is his penchant for ne'er do wells. Those possessive of a wicked sense of humor, grey morals, a disregard for rules, and/or uncommon wit will find themselves of interest to him.
Secondly, a barely-concealed enmity for Gridania lurks beneath his surface- as well as a tendency, when the time comes, to go far too far.

Disclaimer: According to game lore, Amdapor established white magic long before Gridania and the Padjal. Nichais draws upon that power and eventually will become a white mage, though his spell repertoire will be significantly different from Padjali spells. Furthermore, he will not have a soul crystal.
For my own sanity, I'm lifting his spellset from the Kuribu boss from the Lost City of Amdapor (Hard).
